Baskin-Robbins Founder Dies, 31 Scoop Salute
Irvine Robbins, of Baskin-Robbins fame, passed away today at 90. Among other things, he pioneered shop franchising, allowing employees to eat all the ice cream they wanted, and, of course, baseball sundaes, one of my favorite childhood memories where we would never ever choose the A’s over the Giants. EVER. I remember clearly losing my mint chocolate chip at West Portal, and the pimply employee begrudgingly giving my mother another. BR and I lost touch during adolescence, but resurrected our love under the sweltering Davis sun. We have infinitely better options today, but you never forget your first.
I’m so nostalgic today. Whatevs.
